Michael Burcham

The 28-year-old Weymouth man who was allegedly run over by a vehicle driven by a Stoughton teen Monday in Weymouth was arrested Tuesday by police in that town.

At approximately 11 a.m. Tuesday, Weymouth officers took Michael R. Burcham, age 28, of Emilissa Lane in Weymouth into custody at South Shore Hospital, according to Weymouth Police Captain Richard Fuller.

Burcham was ran over by Jeffry Barthelmy, 18, of Stoughton, who was arrested on Monday.

Barthelmy told police that when he arrived on Emilissa Lane, Burcham attacked him, entered the passenger side of the vehicle and attempted to rob him with a hypodermic needle.

Barthelmy said he hit the gas and the alleged victim fell out of the car and was run over, Cpt. Fuller said in a statement.

Barthelmy, who stated that he was homeless but his last known address was on Wheeler Circle in Stoughton, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, using a motor vehicle without authority, operating to endanger, and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

Meanwhile, Burcham was arrested and charged with armed assault with intent to rob (hypodermic syringe), armed carjacking, assault with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to violate the drug laws, police said.

“The arrest was made based on statements from both involved parties, witness reports and evidence found at the scene,” Fuller said in a statement.

Burcham told officers that the incident was result of a heroin deal gone bad.

Congressman Ed Markey

More than 10,000 people cast a ballot in the January 2010 Special Senate Election between Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Martha Coakley.

But just 4,938 voted in Stoughton - total - this time around in the Special Senate Election between Democrat Congressman Ed Markey and Republican businessman Gabriel Gomez on Tuesday, June 25.

Markey won statewide with 55-percent of the vote, with Gomez bringing in 45-percent, according to Boston.com.

In Stoughton, the results were closer. Markey won by just 122 votes, 2,515 to 2,393 (51-percent to 49-percent).

Gomez won precinct 4, but Markey was victorious in the other seven precincts in town, including pulling out victories by just a single vote in precinct 3 and by just eight votes in precinct 1 (see the PDF posted in the media gallery for precinct-by-precinct results).

Third party candidate Richard A. Heos (Twelve Visions Party) received 15 votes townwide. There were 10 write-ins and five blanks cast.

In 2010 58-percent of Stoughton voters cast a ballot in the Special Senate Election, but the turnout was significantly less - just 27-percent - on Tuesday.

In fact, in 2010 Scott Brown received 5,616 votes from Stoughton voters (to Coakley's 4,466), which is almost 700 votes more than the total number of people who voted in the Markey-Gomez election in Stoughton (4,938).

The lower voter turnout was a statewide trend. Both Brown and Coakley surpassed 1 million total votes statewide in 2010. Markey did not crack 700,000 (as of 10:30 p.m. on election night).

This Special U.S. Senate Election in Massachusetts was held to fill the remainder of former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry's term.

Kerry is now the U.S. Secretary of State. Stoughton resident Mo Cowan is serving as interim Senator until the winner of the Special Senate Election is sworn in.

Since supporting Brown, a Republican, in 2010, like the state, Stoughton has backed Democrats in the last two Senate elections - Warren in 2012, and now Markey in 2013.

Drunk Driver Arrested in Stoughton Allegedly Urinates on Floor of Police Station, Assaults Officers

She was the "most vulgar" person he's ever dealt with in more than two decades of policing, Stoughton officer Allen Curtis noted in his police report, according to Deputy Chief Robert Devine.

A Taunton woman, Clarissa Garriga, 23, was arrested for drunk driving, along with a number of other offenses, following a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Washington St. and Walnut St. at 9:53 p.m. on June 15.

Once pulled over by police, Garriga became "completely belligerent," Devine said, including assaulting officers, spitting on them, using racial slurs and urinating on the floor of the police station.

Garriga ultimately was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, speeding in violation of a special regulation, following too close, operating a motor vehicle with unnecessary noise, resisting arrest, vandalizing property, threatening to commit a crime, assault and battery, and assault and battery on a police officer.

The incident started when Garriga allegedly was tailgating a police cruiser, following so close that she almost crashed into the rear of it, Devine said.

Then came what Devine called a "breakdown of civility."

In addition to spitting in officers' faces and using racial slurs after being pulled over and arrested, Garriga tried to kick out the windows from inside the police cruiser, then resisted being removed from the cruiser.

Garriga, 5'4" and 200 pounds, ended up landing on Sgt. Vitaly Gurevich as he tried to remove her from the cruiser, injuring the sergeant, Devine said.

Once in the police station, she removed her underwear and proceeded to urinate in the booking area, Devine said.

Police were unable to obtain a booking photo because of her antics in the station.

Eventually, Garriga was placed in a cell with a spit shield, as she continued to try to spit on officers. Devine said police rarely have to use a spit shield, but had to do so in this case.

"Officers showed a tremendous amount of restraint to someone who was showing little to them," Devine said.
