Stoughton Obituary: Chester Zawaski, 94, Purple Heart Recipient in WWII

Chester J. Zawaski, 94, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Wednesday, March 20, after a brief stay at Southern Maine Medical Center. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years Helen (Socha) Zawaski.

Born and raised in Amherst, MA, he was a graduate of Amherst schools. He was a Veteran of the United States Army in WWII where he earned a Purple Heart for his service during the Battle of the Bulge.

"Chet", as he was known to his friends, family and neighbors, was a resident of Stoughton for over 56 years before moving to Kennebunk, ME several months ago.

Along with his wife Helen, he owned Bowdoin Card and Gift Shop in Dorchester for many years. He retired several years ago. He was a longtime weekly communicant of the former Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Stoughton. 

He is survived by his two daughters; Cathy-Ann Zawaski of Savannah, Georgia. and Linda J. Workman and her husband Neal P. of Kennebunk, Maine. He was the grandfather of Taylor and Whitney Workman both of Maine. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rte 27), in Stoughton on Tuesday, March 26 at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church, 193 North Main St., in Easton at 10 a.m.

Visiting hours are Monday March 25, from 5-8 p.m. at the Farley Funeral Home.

Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Stoughton.
