A Stoughton man was arrested in Canton early Friday morning after he allegedly robbed Austin's Mobil gas station at 2776 Washington Street (Route 138) in Canton near the Interstate 93 interchange, according to an announcement from the Canton Police Department.
Carlos Omar Santiago, 35, of Stoughton was arrested without incident. Santiago was arraigned at Stoughton District Court Friday morning on charges of assault to rob, armed assault and battery, and attempt to commit a crime.
Police responded to the gas station shortly after midnight on Friday, after receiving a report from a clerk at the business.
"Upon the officers arrival, a visibly shaken clerk reported that a light skin or white male party had entered the store wearing a red shirt, shorts, dark-colored baseball cap and a mask," Canton Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen said in a statement.
Santiago allegedly had a gun and demanded the clerk to "give him the money," according to Canton Police.
The clerk then tried to explain that he had no access to the money, after which the suspect walked around the counter and allegedly confronted the clerk with a gun demanding the money. A struggle ensued, and the clerk was able to chase the suspect out of the store.
The clerk sustained a minor injury in the struggle. The suspect did not take money or other items from the store, police said.
Police investigation and leads from witnesses and the store's video surveillance system helped officers to identify and arrest the suspect within hours of the incident.
