Iowa's Ruth Anderson, a nationally known civil rights leader, died at her home in Waterloo Tuesday.

Patrick J. Penney

Patrick J. Penney, 55, died Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton after being stricken ill at home. He was the husband of 18 years of Carla M. (O'Connor) Penney of Stoughton.

Born in Weymouth, he was raised and educated in Stoughton and was a graduate of Stoughton High School.

Penney was a longtime resident of Stoughton. He worked as a mechanic and as a warehouse worker at Lotus Software for several years before health issues lead to his retirement. He was always happy and enjoyed good food, boating, camping and motorcycles.

In addition to his wife, Penney is survived by his mother, Violet G. (Noseworthy) Penney of Stoughton, his stepson, Shane M. O'Connor of Franklin and his siblings, Susanne Ostroff and Charles R. Penney, Jr. both of Stoughton and Arthur P. Penney of Taunton.

He was predeceased by his father, Charles R. Penney and his brother, Richard A. Penney. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews with whom he kept in constant contact. He will be sadly missed by all.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Immaculate Conception Church, 122 Canton St, (Rte 27) Stoughton on Monday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m.

John R. Gallagher

John R. Gallagher, 82, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully at the Jordan Hospital in Plymouth on Friday, March 8. He was the husband of Florence E. (Corcoran) Gallagher.

Born and raised in Dorchester, he was a graduate of Boston Trade School, Class of 1948. He was a resident of Stoughton for 48 years.

Gallagher was a Corporal in the U.S. Army and a Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was a printer in Boston for 20 years before owning a Subway sandwich shop in Bellingham for 23 years. He retired in 1995. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 200 in Stoughton. In his free time he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gallagher is survived by his children, Stephen M. Gallagher and his wife Melissa of Newton, Susan G. Allan and her husband Doug of Milford, Janet E. Pflueger and her husband Gene of Medfield and Michael J. Gallagher and his wife Janet of Plymouth. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren.

Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt.27) in Stoughton on Tuesday, March 12 at 8 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton at 9 a.m. Visiting Hours Monday, March 11 from 4-7 p.m. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.

Richard E. Francis

Richard E. Francis, 73, died at Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham on Wednesday, February 20. Son of the late James E. and Laura (Marble) Francis, he was born in Oak Bluffs.

He was a resident of Stoughton for 40 years before moving to Hingham eight years ago. Mr. Francis was a dock worker for Wilson Freight in Chelmsford for 10 years. He also was a taxi driver for All Town Taxi in Stoughton for several years before retiring eight years ago.

An avid Red Sox fan, he also enjoyed music and being the deejay at the VFW in Stoughton.

Francis is survived by his children, Sandra M. May of Mansfield, Robert E. Francis of Ft. Wayne, IN and Wayne E. Francis of Australia, as well as his grandchildren, Bryan May, Joshua, Steven and Melissa Francis.

He was the brother of the late James and Thomas Francis. He is also survived by his former wife, Kathleen (Gundal), his niece, Paula Hutchinson and several other nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) in Stoughton on Saturday, March 16 at 6 p.m. Visiting Hours prior from 5-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Queen Anne Nursing Home Recreation Dept., 50 Recreation Park Drive, Hingham, MA 02043.
